in childbirth, my anesthesiologist didn't realize my epidural wasn't working. she asked me "how is your pain, on a scale of 1-10?" and I waxed philosophical on the universal scale of pain. in hindsight I should have said "10"

this question continues to perplex me. what is a 3 or a 7? how does the doctor know what my pain tolerance is? I've never been drawn and quartered, that's probably worse than childbirth, right? is it a riddle? are there two doors and a frog who always lies?
