I wonder if Chrome (at least) could be more aggressive about this — running an a11y test in the background after load and printing legit console errors on findings. People get v uppity about those, I’ve noticed 🙃. /cc @slightlylate

I would love that. I would also love it if Lighthouse Accessibility scores impacted Search ranking. It's probably the only thing that can move the needle, like HTTPS ranking change, RWD ranking change, etc.

This idea seems to keep coming around, and I'm not sure I'm a fan, unintended consequences-wise. I agree with the intent, but I don't know that it would make a meaningful difference in actual accessibility, in practice.

In particular: this is something people would definitely game. So we would have things "passing" the lighthouse/axe-core audit, but not actually being truly accessible... but now we would no longer get a meaningful signal from mass running the audit, either.

This is true in perf too, but we still see improvements from putting businesses (and devs) on notice that they need to care about it.

I think the perf metrics used are a much better signal, per my following tweet.

And forgive my ignorance, but I'm not sure how likely it is that the perf measures tested for are going to worsen the user experience. Gaming accessibility audits, on the other hand, is extremely likely to make things less accessible in practice.

the gaming of perf stuff can make content less accesible -- some frameworks are working now to avoid metrics tripwires without actually making their systems end-to-end faster, which gives developers false confidence that they can keep doing what they're doing

My concern is inadvertently encouraging devs to stop improving a11y after reaching a perfect score. A11Y comes from standards + designing w/ the user. They need to pay attention to non-quantifiables like multimodal media, easy screen reader navigation, tangible interaction, etc.

Good to know. I take the point about it being more a lever to get people to pay attention, than to get the situation to improve directly. I guess I just despair that that would happen in practice with accessibility, given the complexity involved and noise in the signal.
