But it's only on the backend side, no? So even if plugins start to pull in tons of deps it'll only affect editors, not customers? But either way most (even super simple) sites already have atrocious perf, tons of JS deps and slow PHP page builders are enough, need no React..

It will bleed through to the frontend as sure as night follows day. It did for jq, it will for react, and folks who pretend otherwise are only kidding themselves
