I have traces from competing tool's "showcase" pages and let me just say that declining to put NPM+React+Webpack at the heart of every pageload has a salutary effect.https://twitter.com/eleven_ty/status/1239268705269358592 …

JavaScript should be a *deeply" intentional choice on the client. Tools that remove intentionality, whatever else they may have done for your team, probably sunk your perf battleship.

But for native apps you can ship as much code as you want so long as you can convince your audience to make that first install. It’s rigged, I tell you.

App size is also correlated with uninstall rates and negatively correlated with take rates. There is no platform where code is free and someone who says there is doesn't serve many users.

Fun datapoint along these lines: you know the PWA prompt banner? It allows sites to offer native apps too via the `prefer_related_applications` field. A few years back we looked at the relative success rates between them. There were surpises!

At the time ('18, I think), we saw relatively similar overall prompt rates. That is, users got offered a native app by roughly the same # of sites as they were offered a PWA to install. And through the rest of the funnel, click-through rates were similar...including "install".

But install success rates were *half or less* for the native apps vs. the PWAs. Similar number of "install" intent actions, half the installs!?!!! Turns out it was download size.

The deck is stacked against more code, on every platform, every time.

You can stratify the question of code sized budgets and set different lines for different teams if it makes things easier -- a "wealthy users team" building to one baseline scenario, a "reach" team building to another -- but that means biting off multiple frontends.

If your strategy is to have a single, reach-oriented frontend, then you implicitly sign up for the hardest target as your baseline.

BTW, the successful-install-rate story is only one half of the equation. Participants in our user studies have consistently reported space concerns, and frequently uninstall apps, sorting by largest first.

iOS does this on your behalf, keeping app settings and an LRU of apps which get re-downloaded as you need them. Sort of like coarse-grained code modules.
