Alex Russell Retweeted Ben is concerned about everything right now

This is a deep truth in all writing, including technical design & why I'm glad to have help put @w3ctag at the heart of Blink process: we all need editors. Every single one of us. Disagreement makes our work stronger, and delivering it with humility and inquisitiveness matters.https://twitter.com/BenKuchera/status/1236310261138628609 …

And it's weird. I can edit someone else's piece, work through it and help with making the piece sing a little better ... and then turn around and write something with similar mistakes. Because writing and editing are two different things, and you can't do both yourself. Truth.

Junior engineers: read this thread and sub in "design" every time the language suggests words. The emotional journey is the same, and sr engineers who take time to hone your designs are doing the best version of their job...but it won't be fun for either party in the moment.

Being senior means delivering bad news. Bad seniors deliver edits and questions as though they're someone else's judgement. You have more choice about who you work with than you imagine. Hire seniors that challenge respectfully but insistently.

If your seniors won't engage challenges of *their* priors, or won't meet the same bars they set for you, *run away*. The point of conflict is to cut to underlying truth/misunderstanding faster. Folks who dodge conflict are inherently toxic to creative and important work.

So expect challenge. And expect to give it. And expect challenge to come with reward, in both directions. But don't expect to be given big opportunities if you won't be challenged and won't push back when (invariably) you know more. That's the work, and it's ok.

One last thing: nobody gets merit badges for being edited; just better work. You'll pass on the same thoughtful, patient approach to your juniors when you get here, if you're good. How will you know? A senior will ask. And you won't feel ready. And that's how it always goes.
