Important additional context: - nowhere in the world are iPhones more than 50% of shipments, and in some major markets, below 2% - *most* phones in use today we're sold in 2016-18. And they may not have been latest model thenhttps://twitter.com/stopsatgreen/status/1233355614274846720 …

    Alex Russell added,

Chart of top-selling smartphones by region. iPhones dominate (especially in North America) and the Samsung A range accounts for most of the rest.

When it comes to smartphones, the world is basically split three ways: expensive iPhones, cheap Samsungs, and China. https://www.counterpointresearch.com/iphone-11-second-best-selling-phone-2019-less-four-months/ … pic.twitter.com/CTbWnEGDti

Note that individual iPhone models can be the largest selling in the US *because Apple makes so few SKUs*. Not even in the US are iPhones the majority:https://www.counterpointresearch.com/us-market-smartphone-share/ …

...so when JS apologists (and let's be real: in 2020, it's the React community) say things like "I'm not building for EM/NBU, I'm building for the US", all I hear is "I don't know my own market and you should not credit anything else I say either"

"nowhere" is a bit strong. I think they might be in very affluent, follow-the-trends markets. Like Norway.https://gs.statcounter.com/vendor-market-share/mobile/norway …

Norway is a country with a population smaller than that of the SF Bay Area, next to a free trade block with 100x the population. If you're building for *just Palo Alto* (effectively), then anything goes. But it's *wildly* unrepresentative.
