This is a frontend reality regardless of tech stack. Rolling your own tab-set or hamburger menu on the web is a *terrible* idea unless you already understand how afraid you should be.https://twitter.com/bodil/status/1230533016713342977 …

Q: But what about <my favourite cool new UI framework>? A: UI frameworks are like crypto: don't roll your own, for reasons largely to do with accessibility. Lots of things are faster and shinier than GTK but if you don't support screen readers, rtl, etc etc then sry but gtfo.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or serious ;) all I can say is: setAttribute + classList.add removeAttribute + classlist.remove Knowing the aria attributes is the actual challenge LOL

Aria, contrast, LTR/vertical, focus management, etc. Seems you're insufficiently terrified ;-)

Very true, but on the other hand, do I really want to use a hamburger component that brings in a few hundred K of dependencies? Maybe it’s time to start paving some cow paths and bring a bunch of these common components into the browser?

So many considerations. The trade-off there is really unfortunate. And the heavy plugin might have a11y/usability issues anyway! (I just rebuilt one from scratch for a client to get off a popular, highly-configurable, yet problematic WP plugin :/ )

makes me think if you really want to make a dent on web performance problems, you could certainly do worse than making responsible WP plugins

Tab set seems like another one like playlist which is inexplicably not hoisted into html. Mind you we still have to polyfill input type="datetime-local"

seems like a strong position to take, so i am missing something. hamburger menu seems simple enough, where are the problem cases? guessing a11y?https://code-boxx.com/simple-responsive-pure-css-hamburger-menu/ …

The need to be afraid here...a sign we’re doing something right with the web we are offering developers to work in or a sign we’re doing something wrong?

Isn’t this an argument for “standards” and a better web platform? I disagree that folks on the web should need to reach for a ui framework to achieve this. But I won’t discredit that the current state of things has a lot of folks under educated about accessibility.
