When React was announced, the core idea (components are pure functions returning virtual DOM nodes that get reconciled to the real DOM) immediately felt right in the same way that git's commit digraph felt right. After 1.5 years of writing real-world React, it still seems right!

Some argue that the DOM can work just fine without VDOM http://webreflection.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-dom-is-not-slow-your-abstraction-is.html … And going forward VDOM may be a luxury that we can ill afford when low spec devices gain the upper hand in the mobile space. https://twitter.com/slightlylate/status/1200889941246349312 … React is still a product of the desktop-era web.

The net-net of all this, eventually, will be to abandon vdom but not reactivity. The better tools have already done so. https://twitter.com/slightlylate/status/1200872447370616832 …

they don't have anything that is even remotely ready to fulfil the tiniest fraction of what we did 6 years ago today or in years to come. the vdom is the 🗝 to cross compatibility. react is not a web framework. the web is merely an implementation detail, which is a leap forward.

This is religion denying what science has already illuminated and I fear for the JS community because of it.

who's denying what? react is everywhere, you're replying via a react component. react is doing things thought impossible, it's breaking boundaries/building bridges that nothing else could. this doesn't come from nowhere, the component model actually works.

Recitation of the liturgy solves no problems. React & it's ecosystem/hangers-on are a key impediment to the web performing adequately on mobile today.

the future is reconciling. react produces native apps that run circles around web views that rely on a freaking chrome browser embed hijacked by vendors to be extra slow and limited in order not to threaten the app stores. nothing in react impedes the web otherwise, that's FUD.

          Replying to @0xca0a @slightlylate and

React and its ecosystem are pretty slow and heavyweight compared to non-VDOM alternatives like Svelte. React is heavy compared to Preact, but getting as light as Preact is a non-goal for the React team. Perf is holding back the mobile web.
