Alex Russell added,
wow, did react grow? i remember react+react-dom were around 30kb once. i hope it finally sheds all the cross browser stuff, pooled events for instance, wasn't that planned already (react...fire?). and maybe a version that only serves hooks, removes all class remnants.
It was Fire...then Flare...now? Who knows. Nothing has slimmed it meaningfully in the past year (or added WC interop, or moved to more modern JS version targets).

if wc interop adds so much as a single kb i would personally prefer a react variant in /dist that goes without. wc, classes, synthetic events and polyfills removed would perhaps shrink it
It only doesn't work because React is carrying around a stupid (large) allow-list of properties. Just bad architecture showing cracks.
Preact and Lit and Svelte and Vue and NG are all smaller and support WC because they lack this defect.
