Surely Rick meant modern JS, ie ES6 and beyond, when he noted how impressive the JS standardization was? I've sadly not been in web dev long enough (originally a boring, corporate .net dev) to even know what you're referring to -- LiveScript? Did you just make that up? ;)

Asking that we understand our values, rather than simply using them as a cudgel? I hope not.

For a starter, not have a single party dictating the vision and the future of the through misguided leadership. Especially when that party is seen by some, as deeply unethical and while realistic alternatives are decreasing.
-
So, what are the mechanisms available for achieving this? What other values is it in conflict with (all the limit)?

Sorry, not interested in throwing away all our hard work on a parallel Rust implementation of restyling to a slower C++ implementation just because Google wrote the latter.

“Engine diversity absolutists” ? This is extremely concerning rhetoric from the Chrome head of standards, especially given the topic of this thread, the potential abuse of Chrome’s market power.

Alex Russell is a toxic gatekeeper that should probably not have the decision power he has.

How benevolent is the single engine gatekeeper? Will key features be enabled on all devices? How long before a fork happens? With uncertainties like these, how can anyone be an absolutist either way? Those who maintain the remaining 3 engines get to make the trade off.

I know the convo feels adversarial, but please don’t read mine this way. It isn’t about Chromium vs. the world; it is about capitalistic power structure. Executives can enforce decisions on code owners. Forks are doomed to fewer engineers ⇒ fewer features ⇒ lower market share.
-
Yup, and the party investing the most has the advantage also because forks will have to spend significant engineering effort in staying close to mainline and reverting whatever was done there that doesn’t align with their vision.
