I have that same mouse, I retired it last year after 20 years of use. It still works fine I just finally decided I wanted a wireless mouse.
I do the same but discovered that they can go bad: MS regulates their lifespan with capacitors, which can dry out. Apparently it is an industry practice: I had the same experience with monitors. For monitors at least you can buy replacement capacitor sets.
