People are digging in their heels at the moment but heads will eventually cool and compromise is still possible at a later date. It's an unfortunate situation but the "let's debate everything for many years and never really ship anything" is literally killing the web.

I think it's rather dismissive of people's legitimate concerns to suggest that they just need to simmer down

I think it's pretty pessimistic to think that disagreement can never be overcome.

I mean, there’s been no good faith admissions by original champions of Web Components that their design was broken from the start, despite very strong disagreement and pushback.

Someone from the Chrome side saying 'actually, yeah, adoptedStyleSheets *did* turn out to be a bit of a mess. Sorry. Here's how we'll prevent it happening again' would go such a long way

I mean, @Rich_Harris this is a case where the WC crowd actually broke from "consistency with past bad DOM apis" which both you and I wish was the case for attroperties too. Webkit's and CSSWG's position was literally "let's keep it bad like the rest of CSSOM".

Mike, what concrete thing can be done about attroperties? Either HTML has to add types (and a whole bunch of other things) or we need a new tree format that's not HTML, I think.

      1. Attributes shouldn't be able to be out of sync from properties. 2. We already have typed attributes in the form of boolean attributes. 3. Adding number typed attributes only requires a bit of imagination.

Not sure 1 is achievable given backwards compatibility but putting that aside and focusing on 3, that's all you want? Just numbers? You don't want objects that can be passed to multiple elements? If so that's cool, I thought the want was much larger here.

I mean JSON is possible too, but I'm trying to be practical. For crying out loud, on* attributes already take in functions. Yes, you cant do 1 for *existing stuff*. The hope would be you could for WC, but WC folks would have to agree consistency with old is not the highest goal

And I want to be clear here. I honestly don't view "consistency with the old" as a bad viewpoint to take, so it wasn't intended as a slight. It's just that's the Twitter version of what I've heard about attroperties every time I've mentioned it. Would love to understand this more
