The reasons you would NEED to make a native app anymore are fast dwindling, PWAs ftwhttps://twitter.com/WebAppManifest/status/1215281765482295296 …

Quite the opposite. #PWA getting more and more restricted - now they will be frozen when running in the background - maybe even on Desktops. And I am not even talking about the castrated push and other (non-) features.

Sounds like this was just an experiment https://groups.google.com/a/chromium.org/d/msg/blink-dev/sotCDcI-E7Y/NouDM3InCQAJ … ? Looks like the team knows that it could cause issues and are looking for a way around that.

It is another attempt to keep #PWA competing with native. Only after heavy flak from a few #webdevelopers (including yours truly) did they decide to re-think the issue. We need to keep pressure up to make them, among other things, allow web-push in doze. Remain vigilant.

Standalone windows (PWAs) will likely be exempted from background tab pausing.

That's not the issue. It's about browser developers unilaterally deciding to break functionality that has been working since the beginning (sort of) of web pages. It has happened before (autoplay comes to mind) and it will happen again.

We are in the business of making tradeoffs between what's best for users and developers, and in a tie, we choose users. That is sometimes a tricky balance to strike. Dispute the premise, too: autoplay was never gauranteed to work and hasn't in many situations in many browsers.

Autoplay is/was a W3C standard. And .. I am sorry - I don't see you in your assumed role as a web deities. Sure - protect the user against malicious actors, but everything else is between the user and the website. No user is forced to use a web-site that is bothersome to him.

And as a developer or user, you're free to choose a browser that sets policies you find more agreeable.

Are you planning to privatize @w3c too? Funny, I always thought the open web was .. well .. open. Good thing you explained to me that the web is what some corporations (for profit or not) decide it is.https://boingboing.net/2019/05/29/hoarding-software-freedom.html …
