Let's talk about the CPU in the $70 phone -- the Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 -- a part announced to ~zero fanfare last year: https://www.anandtech.com/show/13000/qualcomm-announces-snapdragon-632-439-and-429-expanding-the-midtier …

This part is a continuation of a half-decade-long trend: the absolute and total dominance (by volume) of the A53 core design. The Redmi 7A packs 8 A53 cores -- the same basic setup as the Moto G4 I was recommending in '16.

There wasn't a lot to recommend the A53 back in '16. Still isn't. This is a first-gen 64-bit ARM design that topped out at 2MiB of L2, but nobody ever paired it with that much go-juice here in Android land: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_Cortex-A53 …

What they *mostly* paired the A53 with was suuuper EV-leaky 28nm processes node. That meant an already knee-capped design (low-cache, in-order!!!) was bad at frequency scaling too. From '15-'19, the mid-to-low end has been absolutely awash in this disastrous combination.

What makes the Snapdragon 439 different (and better) than the 617 from '16's Moto G4 is the mostly down to process node improvement: TSMC's 12nm instead of the old 28nm

This shows up as a difference in rated top CPU frequencies: 2ghz vs 1.5. That (plus GPU and I/O updates) translate into somewhat better overall responsiveness. But it's not world's different.

What's *absolutely wild*, tho, are the prices. The G4 was ~$200 back in '16. Similar specs can be had for less than a third of that now.

we will get Xiaomi Go someday... someday. (Note this was hard reverse negotiation to make them sell me lowest spec phone in store, not the better ones) :D
