Many questions, but let's start with "who is the user whose needs we serve better as a result?"
I ask because the *last* decade of unbridled JS-first, JS-at-all-costs development has been predicated on increasingly distant calls to better user experiences, but having failed to center *actual users*, they devolved into "DX" self-abuse for no end-user gain.
The lack of a shared native baseline has made a reliance on tooling for development a necessity. This causes development + production tooling to be munged into a rube goldberg machine that we keep tossing pieces on top of. To be clear, this was the best we could do in the past.
With a standardized shared interface for code sharing and baseline capability for a decent DX (e.g. import maps) folks can be less reliant on tooling for development which will allow the tooling ecosystem to focus on production cases
I genuinely believe that if we can nail a really great shared baseline DX we will end up with smarter / smaller bundles and overall better UX in the deployed applications.
This has happened! It just didn't "win". Legacy-first tools rule the roost with no signs that will change. Why (given that I ran this playbook and largely regret the results) will it work _this_ time?
