Is there a fast graphql client JS library? Or is graphql fated to be as synonymous with slow as vdom has become?

This is exactly what I do. I just create a tiny little gqlFetch helper that wraps fetch, parses JSON and looks for/throws errors the way graphql delivers them. I've used this on a half a dozen projects including sbux without feeling need for more.

Yeah we did the same. Simple fetch / axios client wrapper around your graphql queries. Apollo's cache is also fundamentally broken (no TTL). Worth just doing your own caching wrapper based on the query you send to the server.
