No. The URL bar only represents a small portion of the navigation request & response, I don't see why the current display is a red line. Please speak to non-tech folks.

I think this response is missing the point. The point isn't that changing URLs in this particular way has crossed a "red line." The point is the story: Google is "trying to take over the web," and this is just one more "attack" on the open web.

Every time any part of Google does anything that kinda sorta hides any part of an URL, this feeds the theory that Google's trying to kill URLs. When any Googler clarifies their motivations ("this is better for security in the real world") ppl ignore the clarifications ("lies")

Whoa where did "lies" come from? iOS has been focusing on the domain part of URLs for over 5 years, does this make them liars too?

As for "Apple did it first," Apple might *actually* be trying to kill the open web (certainly some Googlers we both follow think so), so folks don't find it convincing.

I note that your first reply in this thread was, "Did you complain about Apple doing this over 5 years ago?" and drybones_5 replied, "Yes." If someone thinks hiding any part of an URL pushes us down a slippery slope away from the linkable web, "Apple did it, too" won't help

I mean that drybones_5 and others think that when you say "we're just focusing on the security-important parts of the URL," they think this is a lie. They think Google is secretly trying to make the URL bar go away, and that security is just a plausible cover story for this step.

Yeah it's hard to deal with conspiracy theories. They're cheap to make.
