That’s rich, coming from the company that abused its #1 search position to drive adoption of Chrome, forked Blink from WebKit, and slams new APIs through without considering perf/privacy. “Open Web” from Google is code for “whatever Is best for Google and ad-tech this week”https://twitter.com/slightlylate/status/1191027005342404608 …

If you're a web developer, this means that iOS -- the whole OS -- is the new IE6. Your CEO and wealthiest users won't switch off it, so it taxes everything you do. They also can't imagine the web being great because, for them, it isn't.

I agree with you and the tweet below at the same time having built webpages from pre-IE6 to today. I wish people didn't feel like they had to take sides between two giant tech companies exploiting their audiences in different ways.https://twitter.com/CongoCart/status/1191084413104402433 …

1st, if you used basic HTML/CSS you were normally fairly fine with even IE6. It wasn't until you started adding much more modern api that you had issues. Currently this is Safari (latest) , just one page of the massive list of missing or partial support. Modern it is not... pic.twitter.com/b7ok8IN5sj

Well in this case, biggest issue is that the rest of the web is trying to move forward; but Safari all by itself because of marketshare is holding us all back. Very much like IE6 was in the past; the whole web wanted to move forward but it was held back. Hence it is equated.

Not really. Safari uses WebKit that Apple regularly updates in their releases. WebKit is opened sourced (we contribute to it at work quite a bit) and if you get new standards in Apple will ship. Since Google’s WebKit fork resources have been a bit divided ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But my main point is IE6 was closed sourced. No one could help push it along. But WebKit is and if you contribute any of these features yourself they can get rolled into an upcoming iOS / macOS update.

We tried. So hard. The Blink fork was the result of many attempts to add features developers needed but which Apple didn't want.
