There seems to be confusion about how, exactly, Apple keeps the web second-class on iOS. Understandable! It's the interplay of several interlocking effects. Let's examine them (thread).https://twitter.com/slightlylate/status/1190665796717957120 …

I agree with you in many ways, but don’t forget: Google forked Blink from WebKit. Do you think maybe, that if Google had continued contributing to WebKit instead, that things would have progressed faster for everyone?

We weighed this up at length before the fork. As things stood, it was ultra painful to get new features into the platform, and Apple doesn't (and didn't) need help paying folks to improve WebKit. That said, we continue to invest heavily in compat via specs & shared tests.

Ultimately you still need to convince them to implement specs to have an interoperable web though. I don’t know the politics, but it seems like if you need to convince them either way, helping an under funded team implement the ever increasing number of standards would be helpful

We weren't able to convince them on new features from within -- Hades knows we tried -- so we picked a future where we could lead by example. Fraught, but I think on balance the right call.

And what's the progressive case for subsidising *Apple*? They can quadruple the size of the WebKit/Safari teams and the bottom line wouldn't ever notice. This is about giving an flip, organisationally.

Yeah clearly they can afford it, they just don’t allocate the resources. But that’s open source. Some contribute more than others, but we all benefit. I imagine you’re having the same discussions with Microsoft at the moment.

They made a choice to keep the pace, rather than be a boat-anchor. Maybe not the way I'd have done it, but I very much respect the call, and the result is better than the previous status-quo!
