There seems to be confusion about how, exactly, Apple keeps the web second-class on iOS. Understandable! It's the interplay of several interlocking effects. Let's examine them (thread).https://twitter.com/slightlylate/status/1190665796717957120 …

I call bullshit.. I’ve worked on a couple of pretty big, crossplatform, web apps, and the 2 major issues are, 1 performance issues on low-medium end android devices, 2 inconsistensies between android devices.

1sr issue is exacerbated by privilege bubble that Apple devices perpetuate. The platform is held back by Apple SW, but their outstanding HW also masks the problems with modern webdev stack for those who could do something about it. Would like to understand 2nd issue better.

*1st. At some level, saying "wealthy users have better hardware" is a tautology. Web ecosystem hasn't responded to new mobile reality, in part, because the JS-first crew is busy inventing new excuses for why they shouldn't have to adapt.

And when the HW is Apple-fast, they're largely right! So we (as a community) have kept right on trucking with approaches that serve only the wealthy. Retreating into privilege is as easy as it is predictable.

I gave a talk that goes into all of this. The late-stage effects are horrifying:https://vimeo.com/364402896

Great talk! Yeah the feeling after was a bit depressing, but still want to fight for the web!
