We spent a lot of time fretting about both (then potential) effects ahead of the fork decision. Still the right call in retrospect, IMO. Apple policy is basically minimally investing in R&D. But the prevalence of iOS devices in the developed world is really starting to slow innovation.

It's not quite that - Apple does invest in R&D, but it is mainly device focused. To keep a software project going there you need to give them a cool thing to demo at launches every couple of years, and that's a weird internal courtiership cycle.
