It did two big things: 1.) compat work now something each team now has to duplicate (although our WPT investment is designed to soften that blow) 2.) Blink pulled away on features because bigger team + Apple was no longer preventing their introduction

We spent a lot of time fretting about both (then potential) effects ahead of the fork decision. Still the right call in retrospect, IMO. Apple policy is basically minimally investing in R&D. But the prevalence of iOS devices in the developed world is really starting to slow innovation.
