There seems to be confusion about how, exactly, Apple keeps the web second-class on iOS. Understandable! It's the interplay of several interlocking effects. Let's examine them (thread).https://twitter.com/slightlylate/status/1190665796717957120 …

If you're a web developer, this means that iOS -- the whole OS -- is the new IE6. Your CEO and wealthiest users won't switch off it, so it taxes everything you do. They also can't imagine the web being great because, for them, it isn't.

If you make your living on the web, it's crucial to understand that Apple is *not on your side*. Every dollar you spend on iOS hardware is a vote against your future.

A necessary addendum: don't take this out on the WebKit team. All of these decisions were made far above their pay-grade. They want a web that can work just as much as you do. Yes, they're Apple employees, but just as oppressed by this as the rest of us.

Wait… your argument is that Apple purposely nerfed Safari because they don’t want users to switch to web apps that they could easily run on Android phones? That seems incredibly far-fetched given how many apps are cross platform & how much they promoted web apps at the start.

You might be right about the effects of Apple’s decisions but this is a hell of a way to strawman their motivations. What “good” reasons might they have for doing this? Security etc

All this presumes that anyone using Apple products would have the poor taste to prefer web apps over native. There are reasons for all this, and it is nothing nefarious as you are trying to make out.

isnt every OS exclusive in some kind? Money is barrier, just the height varies. bla bla. But I mean, Android is just smooth on specific pricier hardware either. Chrome runs everywhere, but also not that smooth on a raspberry pi as on a shiny new macbook. there are always barriers

Ever think why preservation of that linkage is important? Maybe to reduce attack surface? No, that's ridiculous, it must only be to stifle competition.
