Definitely not worse than IE11. And yes, there are those of us out there mandated to still support IE11

Absolutely worse than IE11, because Windows isn't web-hostile. You can change browser on Windows and that can be a meaningful choice. On iOS, it's Hotel Cupertino -- you can check out any time you like, but you'll still be using gimped WebKit.

When competition is undermined at such a fundamental level, progress takes only the courses the keepers find profitable.

Hm... I hear you, but also there enough ‘chrome-only’ google experiences that have cropped up that argument feels a bit hollow.

But in principle I hear what you’re saying. But like all things - we have to follow the money. Google’s interest in the web is fueled by ads. Hence the investment.

Advancement in the web isn’t advancement unless we all go together. And this happens through establishing standards.

Absolutely, which is why I've served as Chrome's standards lead for the past 5 years. We drive more work in the open than most other teams combined and have process in place to help ensure it's collaborative. We're not perfect, ofc.

On the chrome-only sites thing, I (and my colleagues Shruthi and @DasSurma) worked to get a company wide goal to prevent this and constantly work with teams to improve browser support from Google properties. We really, really value these principles.

That’s good! I think we all want to see a better web - even the folks at Apple. Let me maybe pose this as a question : would WebKit keeping parity be enough for you?

Can FP programmers like @reganwald talk to you on getting proper tail call finally in Chromium? That gotta be one of the strangest reneged standards in JS history devoid of strong representation of the Web devs who benefit from it the most. Such devs are ignored in threads

Even the creator of JS finds the opposition against it explicitly weak; everything about the issue just seems swept under the rug like a sci-fi movie where people are afraid mentioning it will make them disappear or their career trajectory stops overnight, lol…

So - can you unpack the phrase ‘chrome standards’ - is this an internal thing or how google interacts with the existing standards committees? I’d love to understand this more.

Hang about, doesn’t Google implement things in Chrome that aren’t standardised, then have all your DevRels encourage everyone to use it thus forcing hate towards browser vendors that “follow the rules” 🤔
