Thank you! I feel like I’m taking crazy pills! Didn’t we have an entire multi-year SSR craze like 9 years ago and came to the same conclusion? But it’s React now so somehow it’s different?

I thought we came to the conclusion that the page should, basically, work without JS, even if it worked slightly differently and better with JS. But apparently I wasn't doing Serious Work On Real Applications; I'm told no one who does has time for that silliness.

That was the conclusion, but we left unstated that you shouldn't *subsequently* break the page with too much JS, so "SSR" lives in the space left by that unstated constraint. It'd matter less if computers and networks, on average, hadn't gotten slower.
