Still not sure I understand the need for TWA in the context of the Play Store. I'm hoping that's a transitional decisions.

You are right in that the stores are no longer necessary as a means of distribution, but their ability to promote an app and propagate its usage is still too great to pass up.

Safari supports PWAs the same way Firefox on Android and Samsung Internet supports them: they don't notify that the app is a PWA, but they allow its installation. That means the app creator must inform and explain the users how to install the app.

This is the problem, why do I have to do so much work just for one platform when it's automatic on others. it's just a manifest with text but on iOS I have to write scripts to do the detection and UI to for the user to install, it also doesn't show installation progress either.
