I can't express enough how much existential dread I have about the open web ecosystem and it's trend towards extinction. Apple, Facebook, performance...
Alex's talk is meant to be a kick in the ass to get you angry and motivated to save the web.https://twitter.com/FronteersConf/status/1185099012128595970 …

Like, I no longer care that much about
@slightlylate's opinions on frameworks (sorry, hun) because it's all moot if we consider that most people access digital online services via their phones but far too few of those services are served by the open web and are declining.2 replies 0 retweets 5 likesShow this thread -

I only care about the weight of frameworks *because* of that decline and the arrow of causality between slow sites and low use. But yeah = (

I think that's the point I was talking about the other day but didn't articulate. Fast sites might slow the down the trend away from web, but not reverse it. So what do we do?

Speed is necessary but not sufficient. I'm really sad we're stuck in this bad place about a baseline need-to-have. To win, we need the model advantages of the web (iteration speed, security, lightweight, shareable) to be felt in the lives of users; hence PWAs, TWAs, Fugu, etc.

I don't disagree about speed being critical but it's table stakes and I feel there's something we need to offer to ensure there's a clear differential

Itteration is good for us developers, bit it's not clear for a user when they still get their updates for functionality almost daily.

It's *great* for end users. Who wants to be managing "app updates"? We've made billions of users sysadmins and it's a shitty thing to do to anyone.

Think about this a the pitch you'd make to a VC for a new product: "you know that thing you have to do over and over and over that doesn't really help you, but you feel guilty about not doing? What if you didn't have to do that any more?" <punchline>

But that's the thing. My android device updates every night and I don't do a single thing.
