JS is the web's CO2, and we should start asking why the biggest polluters aren't cleaning up their respective acts. Loudly. Insistently. Even when that's uncomfortable.

I understand what you are trying here, but extremely not comfortable with this analogy. Humanity can survive the web going away, but not the planet.

I'm not sure why you're comfortable with the web disappearing. All of its potential replacements (to date) are worse for the world.

You’re inventing a position I did not state. But equating the suffering of 7+bn people with any technology is ludicrous. I don’t know why I should state this, but I’m extremely not okay with the web going away.

Fair. If you have a better analogy, happy to adopt it. Scale of the challenge is similar and pollution dynamics have similar externality roots.

I don’t argue that the mechanics of the analogy don’t fit, either. And please don’t do the lazy thing of asking the person who calls you out fix your questionable analogy. You are smarter than that. (I’m on your side here, with what you are trying to achieve)

Sure, we just disagree. Callenge is to accept that access to information is key in modern society, and the web is our substrate in the digital world. Billions of lives will be materially worsened without it. Let's not do the lazy thing of presuming that analogy is equation.

This thread is a bit ridiculous. Information is nice, and I have been working for years to improve open standards, but life on earth beats computers in priority. Let's keep our work in perspective.

Analogy is not equation; @janl brought that to the discussion and I don't endorse it.

Please stop putting arguments in my mouth, I agree with you that all this is important. But to equate this with the literal heat death of humanity is something that I’m not comfortable with.

Do with that what you will, but please don’t invent arguments that pit me against you, because I’m not. 🔥🌎
