Aren't most of the improvements that can be made to that site related to gzipping and caching? That could happen with any stack on a poorly configured server. Would shaving off that 2mb commons bundle and properly configuring the server should make this much, much better?

Yes, I think so. Would also be really cool if they didn't have a 2MB commons bundle to begin with. I think Gatsby does that by default?
