Selfishly, I’d love a thread like that which concludes with a recommendation on which KaiOS phone I can get my hands on in the US that most closely resembles popular Jio Phones (or whatever KaiOS has a large install base).

Or skip the thread. I want to add a KaiOS phone to the device lab. Any idea on what to get? :)

Their success in IN is 100% a consequence of Reliance Jio partnership, e.g.:https://yourstory.com/2019/01/reliance-jiophone-india-handset-2018 …

The Jio Phones are pretty unique -- ultra-cheap data enables a smart-feature-phone-OS that's both locked down (can't debug easily, if at all) and loaded up with Jio-specific services (video, chat, etc.)

All those apps are web-based(ish), but the browser and store are pretty locked down, and discovery is even harder thanks to dpad/T9 interface
