When Usenix stops asking speakers to fucking _pay_ to attend, rather than, you know, paying them and providing child care, I’ll take shade thrown at Black Hat a little more seriously.
As a former PC member at ORA events, it was maddening to see the divergence between ticket prices and speaker support. The process helped to keep speaker quality separate from support needs (good!), but review sessions made quite plain how limited support would be.

Maybe that’s changed! I sure hope it has. My advice for a long, long time was to tell folks to find smaller, single-track conferences where they’d both be supported *and* heard.

And I get the conference business discontinuities: by the time your thing is big enough to have massive marketing engine behind it, you’re paying ruinous amounts to hotel “catering”, etc. etc. Also, sticker isn’t what most attendees pay. And yet.
