Y'all decided you could send 6x as much script because the high-end could take it...but the next billion users can't. There might have been budget for 2x, but not 6x. Not by a long shot.

@v8js team has done amazing work to move compilation off-thread, which is the biggest step-change in the traces I've seen in the past year, but even that is not enough. We're drowning in script.

"How this happened" seems obvious in my work in agencies. It was common to load jQuery + jQuery UI + a bunch of plugins for any medium-size content or ecommerce site (resulting in 300-1000kB of JS before gzip). Because nobody with authority prioritized perf.

Has Google considered making too much JS a negative ranking signal? What if Chrome only executed the first 200K of JS automatically and beyond that the user was asked if they wanted to allow more? Maybe it's time for more drastic nudges.
