For Google Fonts, preloading the eventual woff file helps in most traces

The filename changes all the time, so it’ll work for a few days and then you’re left preloading an unusable resource *and* normal-loading the correct ones :(

Yeah. If you don't need font subsetting (and therefore don't need a dynamic font loader), using a statically hosted font with preload is the win.
