People sometimes suggest I should calm down about web performance because the web feels fine on *their* phone. @DasSurma and I pulled a little data to try to visualise why that might be both true and not particularly relevant:pic.twitter.com/9EfoaEJLgf

I think you should calm down about web performance because you, as a Google engineer, lack the authority to tell engineers at companies without a $1100 stock price what to focus on and how to architect. You will always lack the sense of urgency that 99% of engineers feel.

But that’s the problem. I get that there’s urgency and pressure from up top and then the first thing that gets deprioritized is performance. Why? Because wealthy westeners like you and me have great connectivity and a $1000 phone that can handle it.

Not a single thought on the *average* phone user across the world, who has hardware stuck in 2014. (Let alone spending thought on a11y. Who does that?!)

That’s what needs to change. Frameworks need to pave the path to performance-by-default and developers need to demand performance-by-default. That’s what this is about.

What's not obvious from a single tweet is how much time I spend doing things that won't get me promoted or paid more to work with teams that paint themselves into a perf corner. Perf is a commons, and many engineers and teams furiously externalise these costs...for a while.

I get called in at the point where everyone has had their launch party for the new new thing -- the big framework du jour rewrite -- and now the business wants to know why the numbers are tanking.

I volunteer my time (and Google's money) to help them bandage up what they can and plan a path to a sustainable future. Too often, because of attitudes like the one you've expressed, that means *another* rewrite (assuming business has runway to do it).

Teams in this position have lost mgmt confidence, lost morale, and depending on the amount of religious fervour around tech stack, may need to be fired for business to succeed. So let's talk about constraints, but not as though they let up when you launch.
