Am I reading this chart right? Web component usage has *declined* from 2018H2 to 2019H1, and the deprecated API is still more common than its replacement? https://web.dev/web-components-io-2019 …pic.twitter.com/E1yLgmslSM

Graphs like this imagine the web as this large dynamic landscape of sites that upgrade to new technology regularly. 99% of the websites haven’t been updated in years. jQuery still powers 70% of the web. Pageviews are dominated by a few key players. This graph is meaningless.
If we wanted the graph to have meaning, we’d count the % of origins using WC, and compare it to: 1. Other web standards (to back up the “most successful web standard” claim) 2. FWs like React that are oft cited as competitor / friendly rival.
A few recent features to compare against - grid-template-columns (~4.5%): https://chromestatus.com/metrics/css/timeline/popularity/242 … - IntersectionObserver (~26%): https://chromestatus.com/metrics/feature/timeline/popularity/1368 … - ResizeObserver (~2.6%): https://chromestatus.com/metrics/feature/timeline/popularity/2592 … - Modules (~0.34%): https://chromestatus.com/metrics/feature/timeline/popularity/2615 …pic.twitter.com/Gi9S7fxFjF
26% for IntersectionObserver! that's wild
Yep. Extremely successful. You can see two huge bumps there of almost 10% each, so I'd guess that's two large sites/libraries adopting. IIRC, viewport testing is used massively in ads, and a popular ad network adopting could move the needle this much across many domains.
We designed IO specifically to solve two pressing problems, one of which was connected to ads. Turns out that if you want massive adoption, get the IAB to move all ads attribution to a model that benefits from it ;-)
