And the end result was that websites would feature-detect u2f, try to use it, and break completely because their u2f wrapper expected Chrome's impl.

That's exactly the problem you get, as night follows day, with one implementation shipping unflagged.

It is *insane* to me that other vendors don't have this infrastructure yet. It keeps us from shipping bad things all the time, and gives us *so* much more space to iterate.

You mean other much smaller vendors with decreasing market share and (linked) revenue per annum?

Apple, I get. They are special (tm). I didn't see another link in your tweet, did you mean MS? They are on the chromium bandwagon now, so don't count (no offense!).

Anyway, if these threads end with tu-quoque or mutual blame among Apple and Google, we all lose. There has to be a better way. Blaming Mozilla seems "off".

Again, I'm not trying to blame. You asked the history, and it's painful. I'm optimistic that our new processes and tools (which we built in response to learning from these experiences) get us to a better way to collaborate and iterate -- partiuclarly WRT web developer input

Well, I'm optimistic too, but more on account of chromium market power than any tools.

The Chrome team could prove to itself that its ideas would win on their own merits by refusing Google thumbs on the scale. Want to prove that AMP would win on its own merits? Refuse special carousel placement. If you take the help, you'll never know.
