Yeah, they’re mostly victim of a marketing ploy organized by agencies who have built—and need to keep running—an iOS/Android department.

The reason to nag people into installing the app is that Safari has

I do wonder about it in the case of some of the major apps, like Facebook, especially with Messenger being app-only now.

Yes; they use the CCT protocol, preserving user choice along the way.

Not all Android browsers support TWA yet, but support is increasing, and the fallback experience is to show the CCT UI, so functional if imperfect
