I thought the entire point of react was that it was an abstraction of the DOM that works cross-browser. The browser implementation is AKA "DOM".

React is mostly about improving component structure and reusability between different parts of an application. Cross-browser functionality is a side effect when application itself is designed right. React core does a lot to help, though.
