Basically, web packaging/signed exchanges are "HTTPS over X" where X can be anything like BitTorrent, to signal messages or even a USB stick while retaining the origin security model and the integrity guarantees of TLShttps://twitter.com/kennethrohde/status/1118446617680580609?s=19 …

Soon supported by Edge too, as well as other derived browsers like Samsung Internet. It is a great idea for caching (things are signed and secure) and also to distribute content in alternative ways, which is interesting for countries who block IP adresses

Sounds like a step towards a more decentralized web? Yes, indeed, removing the strong dependency between TLS, DNS, and IP is what introduces flexible network topology into the web. A big change? Yes! Worth pursuing? Yes Mozilla should take another look!

If only this tech was not pushed by a company known for "we want to have all your base belong to us", a goal easily achievable under this banner of decentralization.

The tech is being pushed by the W3C TAG. We're just implementing.

You're not just implementing. The Signed HTTP Exchanges spec was authored by @jyasskin from @Google.

I think it's fair to say we're pushing it. The question is our motives, which I claim is to improve the web rather than to "all your base" it, but I would say that either way. If you see design changes that would ⬇️ the "all your base" chances w/o breaking use cases, let me know.

BTW, if you'd like to understand how important this is to the platform, the @w3ctag both started work in this area: https://www.w3.org/TR/2018/NOTE-web-packaging-20180130/ … And requested that AMP fix its URL/origin-model disaster using packages: https://www.w3.org/2001/tag/doc/distributed-content/ …

That Googlers (including me) have helped push for it is pretty immaterial to the question of it's potential impact and generalized utility. It's a blot on the browser community that we didn't get it done sooner, frankly.

I am really curious if we are to experience a larger non-amp adoption of signed exchanges in the future.
