I'm an engineering TL (tech lead) on two major efforts in web platform, Chrome. When meeting external (to my org) folks I get asked: "what is your role"? Even when they know what I'm working on. What should I make of this? Do *men* get this question too? How should I respond? :)

My experience with folks outside of Google is that "TL" is as confusing as "PM" (Product? Project? etc.). It's a role whose scope is not immediately evident and has highly situated meaning. The Google version of this is very different to, e.g., the MSFT version.

My approach, which is honestly not that good, is to cite which features or outcomes I can positively influence for the other person (usually a partner) that will matter to them.
