The idea that we'll need to teach every future generation of webdev how to operate bundlers and transpilers and all the rest strikes me as a good way not to have future generations of web developers.https://twitter.com/justinfagnani/status/1114175719456657410 …

Yeah, TC39 has dropped the ball by letting the TypeScript folks effectively block proposals on typing. Clearly needed, should be built-in.

wasn't aware TS had been blocking progress, that really sucks. it's such a powerful and valuable linter that doesn't force me to change stuff

These things are always two-sided. My view is that TC39 shouldn't have let TS not wanting to engage stop progress the way it did.

yeah i mean the TS people have historically added cross compile targets, TC39 should have just gone 'here's a new one' if possible. i'm sure the ts people would have eventually added passthrough support for that dialect

There's no reason to think that TC39 could come to consensus on (or has any brilliant new ideas for) the two hard questions: (1) what should the type system be, and (2) should types be soundly enforced when interoperating with regular JS.

The constraint of strict consensus is...not an asset... (see also: Promises, cancellable promises, multi-year delays on classes, etc.)

Strict consensus really isn't the problem here.

I don't think we're going to reach consensus on that

I think writing a proposal for how types should work would demonstrate that we're very far from any agreement.
