i have a policy of just not using them. it hurt me to introduce tsc into my workflow but it was so big i couldn't not do it

Yeah, TC39 has dropped the ball by letting the TypeScript folks effectively block proposals on typing. Clearly needed, should be built-in.

Eh. How do you learn C++? First you learn this magical pure version, then you learn autoconf etc, then you say “oh crap” and deal with MFC. Not that dissimilar, and the language is still doing just fine.

Babel et al are more like Boost. Having that be required knowledge is an almighty huge tax.

There will always be specific custom needs once you get past 'hello world' and need to include things from varying teams with varying tech/assets. Until we have 'Jarvis, build me a webapp!', I think what e.g. works with rollup combined with workbox makes things simple

Sure, absolutely, and performance needs always make space for tooling. How far into the journey you have to pay that price *matters*, tho.
