Worried that @slightlylate has incepted me with web component zeal... but no lie, slightly concerned that if I move away from React I won't be able to get a job. :/

I've learned to my detriment that it's actually more lucrative and respected to sell yourself as someone who can make your fat stack more performant... rather than someone who will simply suggest the bare minimum the company needs.

Yep. We lionize fire-fighters, not architects, building-inspectors, or the folks setting fire safety code.

IDK...I tend to just _show_ people their own websites. It tends to be clarifying when you run something through http://webpagetest.org/easy and you can run the video of the site running on 3G on a Moto G4. Decision makers never actually _see_ what their customers feel.

Nothing quite like a side-by-side WPT filmstrip of a site against competitor. From there, digging into the trace to show the big sources of lag and main-thread jank (selectively blocking resources is great fun) focuses people's attention. Remediation is often super painful, tho.
