It wasn't all that long ago that a portion of devs ditched jQuery because 30 KB was too big… 30 KB baseline cost seems quaint nowhttps://twitter.com/sitnikcode/status/1109537848129146880 …

Most of static websites do not need React. 1. 300 KB of JS is too big for most of landings. 2. You can split CSS, JS, and HTML to components without React. https://twitter.com/dan_abramov/status/1109461037391187968 …

Depends on who you define as 'our' is here... Maybe the people who build for the web, but we don't build for ourselves...

'our' as in: everywhere. I don't see people getting slower devices over the years, or losing access to their devices.

You need to follow @slightlylate. The devices people are buying aren't getting faster, they're getting cheaper (or the screen is getting bigger but the hardware is still terrible)

*SOME* devices are getting faster and even more expensive, but the idea that we can afford more JS (or even as much as we currently use) is in not-even-wrong territory

The spread is widening as we approach saturation. The $50-200 phone is a real thing, and people try to use the web on them. This goes poorly. When that's the common experience of the web, why bother? Destroying ability to enter entire markets, one bloatware choice at a time.

You got any studies or stuff to back this up? I'd like to be able to reference it in the future 👀

We have data, not sure what I can share. Will try to extract some. Important metrics are about *active* devices, memory, and core-gen/count
