We did prioritize a lot of amazing features though! Nesting was easily handled with tooling while ex. Grid wasn't. I actually think we made the right trade offs. Separately in blink we had to rewrite the parser from scratch (which webkit now uses too).

My curse is that I see deadweight losses and can't ignore them the way it seems everyone else can.

Unfortunately, a lot of time & effort at CSS WG gets spent on figuring out the messy interop problems from when people tried to do the spec too fast & didn't clearly define all the details. Should we have better guidelines? Of course. But rendering is often messier than APIs.
