And here I was wanting to have a real conversation, and planning to talk to the IAB team when I get out of bootcamp. :(

You can still do that. You would if you cared about the user rather than your injured pride. It's utterly mad to defend this. Someone with a conscience would be deeply embarrassed. Talk to your team. Nobody should use your app till then. No one.

user-hostile product choices like this are not something you get to go 'oops' on and say you're trying to fix it and it would go better if people weren't loud about it i think we all know what it's like to have metrics/deadlines you have to hit but it's ABSOLUTELY no excuse

if your culture accepts doing stuff like this, things like this will continue to happen. you don't get things like 'toyota car firmware has defects that killed people' without recurring compromises in engineering and safety culture

FWIW, chrome custom tabs didn't exist when most of this stuff was built. I know Pinterest has talked with Chrome folks about implementing CCT, and hopefully it will happen in the future.

Yep, I know the history is long and tortured. OSes made big messes and we're collectively cleaning them up, but apps have a lot of responsibility for their choices here and now.

there's also 'didn't use CCTs' separate from the issue of 'chose to do something questionable with the access we got by using webviews'

Happy to absolve apps of some blame. They're in a tight competitive loop and platform-level concerns like security and privacy often take a back seat in that environment. It's the disconnect between claiming to care and this behavior, however, that I take issue with.

...and whatever blame I absolve apps of I place right back onto app stores. Why did they every allow this to continue in a post-CCT world?
