The first screenshot of a server-side rendered (ssr) ionic app, which uses shadow dom 👻. Output is only html/css, and inlined styles are scoped to the re-created shadow dom nodes. Clientside JS will then hydrate existing nodes that were already created by the prerendered dom.pic.twitter.com/o7YiUxBsEl

Key word here is "shadow dom" components. The styling is still applied in the initial html/css, and no js is required for this view. Once the JS does finish downloading, it'll then lazily transform the existing nodes into runtime shadow dom.

I've often thought that tools like this could inline little snippets to reparent the SD bits; could perhaps save the wait on full script download. Is that an option here?

Great question and I've been wondering the same. What I'm finishing right now is that the stencil runtime would be required, which would be ~3kb, but they only client-side hydrate as the actual component implementation downloads. So each component doesn't require the entire app

I tried this approach before and creating a lot of little scripts was expensive: https://discourse.wicg.io/t/declarative-shadow-dom/1904/8?u=matthewp …

Instead of little scripts you could have a custom element that does the reparenting and only have to inline the custom element (likely very small) in the head...
