BT does the same in the UK. So they can sell you family protect. Simple enough to put own hardware in, but a royal pain that we have to do it in the first place.

That's a plausible cover story for sure, but they don't restrict DNS config to only those that opt into that service; it's blanket.

A few years ago Comcast told me they had no modem-routers in Virginia that I could VPN to my office with. I had to buy a router and bridge to theirs. I’m happy to have moved where they’re not the cable provider.
