Without disagreeing that we should be constantly seeking to improve the standards process and make it more inclusive, can we appreciate for a moment what an improvement it is that today these things *can* be found on a slide deck or in a GitHub comment?

So much of this stuff used to happen entirely behind closed doors, and that only improved because of the enormous effort of people who believed strongly in the need to open the process up to the world.

The limiting factor IMO is time and energy. People already feel like standards bodies move too slowly. Gaining consensus across so many different groups is emotionally exhausting, and that’s before dealing with the general public. It’s a hard balance to get right.

I’m just breaking boxes man. But it matters that a lot of the people here, who are *directly* involved with the standards process, wanna spend time being defensive rather than putting effort into fulfilling the actual request for information.

I would love to hear suggestions for ways that this information can be even more accessible than it already is, without incurring substantial additional work that's expected to be done for free

If you don’t know then just say that. If it’s not written down because that takes more effort than you can do for free, then say that. What sucks is talking about how important community engagement is and then getting mad at the community for telling you you’re not nailing it.

Conversely, trying to engage but being told you’re engaging wrong is emotionally draining after an already emotionally draining 3 days of standards meetings. But point taken.

That’s not what I said. You’re still swapping causality right now. You all tend to reach boiling points and overreact to light criticism because you’re burned out and feeling unappreciated. It’s a really common pattern with this standards shit.

It’s understandable, and I sympathize. Except when it comes with this rhetoric like you’re saving the world and we’re all ungrateful. You can miss me with that bullshit.https://twitter.com/tomdale/status/1091462723135852545?s=21 …

The world owes you, @wycats, @paul_irish and others so much for your willingness to fight to open up standards to practitioners. I don’t think you’ll ever get that gratitude, but… y’know. *I* know it.

I'm asking fellow community members for ideas to fix a problem and you're telling me that I'm not doing enough, or should just stop? I can't tell now. I got involved to make the process more transparent, accessible and inclusive to practitioners that wanted to participate.
