I’d go so far as to say: the identity provider should be a protocol on the web itself, under public control rather than a single private entity.https://twitter.com/EricaJoy/status/1046108050896171013 …

Perhaps. But it’s not correct for her to present this as somehow connected to the business model. That’s just riding the hobby horse.

Fair. But I think Ben's point is more we need a standard that companies can be built on top of, sort of like SMTP is the basis of web email companies (not a perfect analogy). That standard can create a safe/trusted way that is independent (one would hope) of a business model

That’s certainly possible, and crypto (yes buzzword) is probably the answer, if there is one. I’m also interested in what Apple could do here - I’d love an ApplePay-like modal sheet for giving an app or website an identity.

If Apple were to make this an open standard for others (much like they did for CSS3) I'd be all for that. Again, there is nothing stopping Apple from deeply integrating this open standard and being better in many ways: compete on implementation, not the core API

Right right right. It would almost certainly be a JavaScript API, just like (eg) microphone and camera access are. If it was one company’s proprietary solution we haven’t gained anything. Then vendors compete on user experience and features over the top, as they do with email.

The idea that a browser vendor gives up control over the endpoint of an API just because it's exposed to script is a rookie assumption. The politics and tactics go much, much deeper. Just look at how the open API f or payments (PR+PRH) got locked back down by Apple.
